Healthy Homes & Communities Plenary

Chronic disinvestment in low-income communities has trapped millions of families in unhealthy and inefficient housing, as well as living in communities with limited access to opportunity.  This public-private-philanthropic panel of experts will discuss the impact of building and rehabbing healthy homes and the ways in which federal, state, and private programs have addressed green and healthy housing.  Emerging trends and  strategies that promote affordable housing and communities that are healthy, safe, and sustainable will be addressed.

Panelists will provide examples of successful outreach and education campaigns targeting elected officials, media, residents, and the general public. Participants will learn about best practices and strategies for making health a priority in their communities and for integrating healthy homes principles into existing programs.

Thursday, Workshop I 4:00 - 5:15pm 

Lead Hazards: Prevention & Risk Management

Best practices, tools, and strategies for developers and managers of affordable housing and tenant advocates on addressing lead hazards and mitigating risks, exposure. How can participants combine funding sources to maximize lead hazard control dollars by conducting lead hazard controls in conjunction with rehab and weatherization programs? How can we incorporate healthy homes interventions with lead hazard control programs?

Public Health in Housing & Community Design

By incorporating health goals and standards into housing and community development, non-profit providers can positively impact public health outcomes in their neighborhoods. This workshop will outline several tools that can be used for building healthy homes and communities, including the use of health impact assessments, agency partnerships and community empowerment strategies, creative partnerships, and land use planning strategies. Participants will be able to make connections between land use policies, transportation, and community design to further public health goals.

Friday, Workshop II 9:30 - 10:45am
Energy Efficiency & Weatherization

This workshop will address best practices in energy efficiency and weatherization as well as policy options that can take programs and communities to the next level. Information will be presented on the Weatherization Assistance Program, DOE’s Home Weatherization Program, and the VP’s Recovery through Retrofit Initiatives as tools for building and rehabbing healthy homes.  Participants will learn about financing and funding, and mechanisms for incorporating these initiatives into the work of developers, community development advocates, housing counselors and residents.  The session will meet the needs of both developers and advocates.

Bringing Healthy Food Home

This workshop will explore the relationship between building healthy communities and increasing access to healthy food through innovative policies. Policy tools such as the use of housing tax credits and green building standards will be explored as strategies to incentivize the development of affordable housing with food access goals in mind. Participants will learn about best practices and innovative strategies along with recommendations for how existing standards could be strengthened.

Aging in Place

In this workshop, panelists and participants will discuss the benefits of universal design in promoting aging-in-place, energy efficiency options that will promote long-term affordability and additional housing design principles that influence the health of aging residents. The workshop will provide strategies for integrating these principles into building practice and will focus on indoor environmental quality factors, housing and community design factors and active aging conditions.

Friday, Workshop III 11:00am-12:15pm 

High Risk Housing

This session will explore the use of healthy home assessments and interventions in addressing public health concerns in low-income communities. Participants will learn about “Healthy Neighborhoods”, an award-winning assessment and intervention program that addresses asthma, tobacco cessation, indoor air quality, lead and fire safety in select counties throughout New York State.

Revitalizing Communities

How have neighborhoods become more sustainable, affordable, and attract entrepreneurs and creative talent that can rebuild blighted areas with a sense of place where people want to live, work, shop and play?  This session will address the NYS Main Street program, funding sources, strategies, creative partnerships, challenges, and pitfalls.
