House New York Program
HOUSE-NY is a new housing initiative to encourage local communities to assess their housing needs and create shovel-ready housing sites. Shovel-ready sites are sites that are completely ready for the development of housing, including having an established housing need, and having met all zoning and environmental requirements.
Through HOUSE-NY, interested communities will receive technical and financial assistance to produce an inventory of shovel-ready and hammer-ready sites that can be used for local community development efforts to increase housing production. New construction, or rehabilitation of existing structures, to create housing on these shove-ready and hammer-ready sites will be placed on a fast track and, because of the high degree of readiness, will be viewed favorably when applying for State housing subsidies.
Housing developments with a mix of incomes can be the most desirable for a community, and HOUSE-NY encourages such developments. There is no minimum number of units in a HOUSE-NY development, and no targeted income group.
Housing programs are now available to help communities develop rental properties, homeownership properties, single and multifamily properties for all income groups, and family and senior housing projects. Also, communities may use HOUSE-NY to help address housing needs for local municipal workers, such as fire fighters, police officers, teachers, health care workers, and others who provide vital community services.
